What I learned after 30 days of studying Japanese

It wasn't how to speak Japanese

So actually, a lot of things have changed since last post

  1. I moved from Honolulu to Miami

  2. I’ve streamlined my diet down to Broccoli, chicken, rice and beans

  3. I’ve been posting 25 posts per day on X now since July

  4. I’ve become known as the “gun runner” at work. Basically, If I show up to your workplace, I’m there to fix a problem

What’s kept me grounded is having a “north star” or key tenant to focus on that all other things in life fall behind in the priority tier list. After visiting my in-laws in Japan, it became clear that the only thing that mattered was learning Japanese to speak to them normally, then moving to Japan. I’ll figure out the money part later (but before actually moving).

So there’s my first step. - Learn Japanese.

2nd step - money. I make a decent income now, but my job is not remote and certainly won’t be able to do it in Japan. Its a shame because I really like my job, and my closest alternative to making “remote” income is to go back into the squid game military and do my last six years, but I would effectively be capping my income at around 120k for those six years. Its not really healthy to run a stable business (i tried for 14 years) while active duty, so I’d be leaving a lot of my growth on the table for a stable life in rural Japan. in 6 years. Hard to stomach. Not to mention the pressures of being in the military with a family.

So where am I now. My main goals are to learn the most common1500 Japanese vocab words as fast as possible (After 30 days I should be at 300, but I’m only at 129).

out of 1500 cards total, I’m learning 86, and have only really learned 33. Looking back on it, 10 cards a day was pretty outrageous.

To do this I need to focus even more by eliminating extra things from my life. I just started Walmart+ (free grocery delivery with Amex Platinum) and have committed to no non-Japanese media. Lets see how this goes

Till next time
